Original Piaggio PX-Stella Shifting Cross flat type. Fits PX 1984 and later and Stella

Also called CRUCIFORM, SHIFT DOG, SHIFTING SPIDER, CROCERA CAMBIO.

The vintage Vespa shifting cross has one of the toughest jobs in the whole motor. The cross is selected within the desired gear on the output shaft every time you change gears and ensures that the power of the motor can be transmitted through the desired gear, to the axle, and finally the rear wheel.

The intervals at which the cruciform should be replaced are determined by the mileage of the motor, how and the condition of the other shifting components (also how many wheels you pull). The average life of a shifting cross is usually 5,000-10,000 miles.

There's a lot of other factors that can shorten the life of the shifting cross, broken or incorrect selector boxes, badly adjusted shifter cables, old gear oil, and worn out gears can all shorten the life of an average cruciform quite drastically.

This all leads to the gears not staying in position and in a worst case scenario create much more extensive damage within your motor. For this reason the cruciform should be replaced during every major service of your motor. Along with inspecting all the other shifting components.
