It's called a "cush gear" because it functions as a shock absorber, or "cushion", for your transmission. For larger bikes with more torque, it requires periodic rebuilding or replacement, and a rebuilt cush gear often provides a noticeable improvement. On the other hand, a shoddy cush gear can lead to a damaged crankshaft, clutch, and even the engine cases. It would be a total bummer to replace these things simply because your cush gear needs rebuilding! More than that, if you're installing an overdrive gear kit, rebuilding the cush gear is a must, but don't worry, this is yet another specialized service Vespa Motorsport can perform. Our shop is set up to completely overhaul the cush gear on any vintage Vespa: we'll disassemble the cush gear and replace the internal springs, end plates, and rivets before reassembly. After that, you'll be riding smooth and comforted by the fact that your engine is getting the cushion it deserve! |
