Exhausts are the most common upgrade made to scooters and motorcycles worldwide. That's because the factory exhaust that came on your scooter is generally designed to suppress sound, pass emissions and give the best gas mileage. It was not designed to maximize power.
Upgrading to an aftermarket exhaust is an easy way to personalize your scooter and improve high-rpm power. In addition to add MPH at the top end, performance exhausts can also make your scooter look sportier and give it a throatier sound overall. In fact, increasing the volume of your scooter's exhaust can even make you safer. It doesn't have to be Harley loud, but a small bump in loudness will make other drivers know you're there. That's why they say "Loud pipes save lives."
For the DIY mechanic most exhausts bolt-on really easily. On the other hand, having an exhaust professionally installed shouldn't cost you more than an hour's labor, including re-jetting. (When installing a new exhaust, up-jetting your carburetor is a must on two-strokes and also recommended for most four-strokes.)
